The importance of a good phono stage
Turntables use mostly either moving magnet or moving coil cartridges. Whichever you use, the output is very low and a normal input on your amplifier does not have enough gain, and no equalisation to drive these cartridges. In addition, even if many amplifiers have dedicated MM/MC inputs, these are often low specification items, suitable only for getting basic sound from a turntable.
